The setting is a nation in decline. A few dozen years of arrogance and an undeserved high profile on the world stage had followed centuries of violence, inequality, and even slavery, but for the past few decades, the nation slid into decadence and oligarchy. Now any number of escalating crises are ongoing, all the leaders are hopelessly corrupt and evil, and anyone deemed an enemy by those leaders is murdered by police, sent off to a concentration camp, permanently impoverished, incarcerated, or otherwise subject to insurmountable circumstances.
